You would like to think that you could easily spot any large issues in your home. But this is not always the case. The fact is, some signs may be pretty subtle and may pass you by undetected. Others are pretty obvious, like a huge crack in your wall. Like anything else, if you know what to look for, then you can get the problem sorted before it gets any worse. This means it will be less expensive to resolve. Below are a few examples of things to look for which may indicate a big issue with your home in some way.
Doors that Won’t Close
Doors that stick or won’t close but used to with no issue may be an indication that something has changed in the overall structure of your home. Expansive clay soil may be one reason. Clay soil expands with it is wet and applied pressure to the foundations, which can cause them to shift. Or perhaps the house has settled, and this is normal proceeds. Whatever the cause, you should have it investigated by a good contractor.
A Crack in Your Window
A crack in a window that isn’t due to impact needs to be investigated asap. It could be a pressure crack due to structural shifting. Generally speaking, a pressure crack is a solitary crack that runs the entries span of the window, i.e., from one edge to another. You may want to have a look at the walls to determine if there are any cracks there too. If you find more, you should call a contractor as soon as possible.
Shredded Paper Laying About
If you start finding little clumps of shredded paper dotted about, this is a warning that you may have a rodent invasion. Shredded paper is great nest material for a rat or a mouse, and rodents are a significant health hazard. You can try and catch them, or it may be prudent to contact local exterminators as you may well have a worse problem than you thought. Also, an exterminator can advise you on how to prevent rats and mice in the future.
Slow Drainage
If all your drainage apertures are experiencing slow drainage, as opposed to just one, then this may well be an indication of an obstruction in your main sewer line. This is s aserio0us issue that needs immediate attention. So, get in touch with a plumber asap.
Gurgling Toilet
No one wants a gurgling toilet. Just the thought is pretty nasty to be honest, and may cause it to back up. If you happen to hear this gurgling noise, then you need to pay attention, don’t ignore it. Something most definitely is not right. The noise may well be an indication that there is negative air pressure inside your home. This air pressure is beginning to build up right down your drain line. What happened is an airlock is created, and this is generally caused by some sort of obstruction or clog. If you cannot resolve the issue yourself, it is best you contact a plumber.
